Hola! I’m test-posting from Panera, which has turned out to be a happening spot for elderly Boca Ratonian gentlemen at 9pm on Tuesdays. Panera is probably my favorite food chain, but I unfortunately have a wheat intolerance so this test-post is going to be gluten free. I’ve also just learned that the word “panera” apparently means bread in Spanish, which makes this whole thing kind of sad, doesn’t it? Unrequited love. I’m also wondering: why Spanish? Although the French word (“pain”) probably wouldn’t have gone over too well with American consumers. But it would be a nice fit for those of us with wheat intolerance…

I’m in the MFA Fiction program here at FAU, I’m originally from Michigan and most recently Chicago(ish). I used to work in public relations, and I played the flute through college in the Michigan Pops Orchestra. I love creative fiction. I also love sports, particularly basketball, beach volleyball, and pickleball. Since moving here I’ve also realized that I’ve somehow become the worst kind of coffee snob; if you have good java spots to recommend to me I’d love to hear them!

This is me holding a mug I should have bought 😥

How are you?? (I really want to know :)  I am one of two Ashely’s in the class (hey Ashley!)

Here’s my academic & professional stuff:

In addition, I am an English MA candidate, writing consultant, and (obviously) a GTA at Florida Atlantic University. I graduated from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in 2013 (Go Rattlers!). In my free time I “blog,” and contribute to the digital lifestyle magazine Black Girl Fly in the Lifestyle & Culture section. I am planning on pursuing a PhD in English, concentrating on works of fiction by Black women authors of the (late) 20th and 21st century. My research interests include American history, queer studies, feminism/womanism, hip-hop studies, pop culture, and digital content creation.

Here’s some personal info:

I am the best big sister ever (often debated by my little brother).

I LOVE traveling (my avatar is a picture of me in New Orleans).

(Here’s a better view, I was on the verge of tears here)

I own an obnoxious (my mom’s opinion) amount of graphic t-shirts and backless earrings.

Hey everyone! My name is Cailley. I completed my undergrad in English from Central Michigan University. CMU was a great school but I was desperate to get away from the Michigan winters. Imagine walking to class when it is -20 degrees with a -45 degree wind chill. (If you can’t imagine what that is like then you should consider yourself lucky!)  Long story short I wound up at FAU! I am working on my English M.A. with a concentration in Science Fiction.

I’m totally a sci/fi fantasy nerd. I’m most interested in technological/cyber-y types of fiction, but I love anything with a social/cultural/political undertone. Two of my (current) favorite books are China Mieville’s Perdido Street Station and Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. I also love to travel and see the world. There isn’t a place on this earth that I don’t want to see. This summer I spent 62 days travelling around Indonesia and it was scary, exciting, horrifying, beautiful, painful, and sometimes frustrating but it was definitely life changing.

Hello everyone,

Looking forward to getting to know you all this semester. Most of my time is spent with my two-year-old daughter and our schnauzer. I like spending time with family and friends, getting slightly sunburned at the beach, playing guitar, cooking massive and elaborate vegan feasts, practicing foreign languages, sweating my butt off at Bikram yoga, traveling when I have the chance, and reading books late into the night.

I’m Kathleen. I write poems, among other things. I’m from Kansas – the cool part, not the wheat fields. If you flew above Kansas and scraped through the many layers of cloud, you would see hundreds of miles of wheat fields, occasionally speckled with white windmills. You would remember the wheat fields best. They take up space.

But if at night you looked out the window over the northeastern corner, you would see a cluster of illuminated freckles below. That’s Kansas City. We have great barbeque. I wish I liked barbeque. Someone remarked last week that I must miss Kansas City barbeque, and I felt disloyal because I said, “I’m OK with crab cakes.”

Not to reinforce the Kansas stereotype. At least these are hills, not plains.

Hello! I’m Melissa. I am a first year English MA student. I got my BA from Nova Southeastern University, which has a TINY English program. I believe I was one of twenty-eight English majors. In the entire school.

Other things to know about me: I am obsessed with penguins. They’re the best. I’m also a big HP/GoT fan. Before starting at FAU, I used to be a barista, so my caffeine addiction not only runs deep but is also very particular.

My name is Danielle Haugk, and I’m in the MA program, hopefully specializing in 20th century American lit? Maybe? Who knows! I guess some things to know about me would include the fact that I am a very jumpy person, easily startled, and I love to pull pranks on people. In retrospect, those two traits might not be the best combination.

Another fun fact: nature rejects me. I am the survivor of frequent animal attacks for no apparent reason. Whether it be snakes, turtles (sounds funny, but it has happened), peacocks, ducks, emus- essentially all birds- I’ve had some ridiculous experiences. It is almost a guaranteed fact that I will show up to class one night this semester after narrowly escaping with my life from some absurd encounter, so be prepared! : )

Hi there. I’m Kira. I’m in the Comparative Studies doctoral program, and I received my MA & BA in English from Kutztown University in PA.

I love fantasy literature, and sci-fi. Currently I’m reading Nemesis Games, the fifth book in the Expanse series by James S.A. Corey, AND The Fire Rose by Mercedes Lackey, which I’m not enjoying as much as I thought I would. I’m also a gamer, mainly Dragon Age, but I also love many others as well (Prince of Persia, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Psychonauts). I love coffee, beer, and cats. I used to perform in community theatre (some plays, but mostly musicals). I can play the piano. I am pretty addicted to Tumblr. I’m already making plans to attend the Epcot Food & Wine Festival this year (one of the only things that keeps me going back to Disney). Research-wise, I’m fascinated by storytelling across mediums, so transmedia is a big focus of mine, as well as fantasy studies.

Nice to meet you!
